Making space for conversations about life online
Today is International Safer Internet Day 2023!
Celebrated in over 170 countries around the world. This year’s theme encourages us all to take the time to listen to children and youth and make positive changes together.
Family discussions and conversations about how to keep safe online are much more impactful than the app or game-based parental controls. Engaging our children in curious conversations about their online lives provides opportunities for families to have value-based conversations about online conduct.
I hope that you will join me this year, with other parents, caregivers, teachers, government policymakers and Internet industry representatives, to take the time to listen to children and young people about their activities online—and make the internet better and safer for everyone.
Together for a better internet
Include children and youth in your conversations today and ask them about online safety; ask about their favourite game, an online friend, or a scary moment online.
Dialogue with adults is kids’ best defence online
This year, let’s ask ourselves as parents, teachers, counsellors and community service workers:
What issues really matter to children and young people?
What changes do they want to see?
How can we all work together to advocate for them moving forward?
Start a conversation with the children in your life today!
